At the
behest of Melbourne’s
Archbishop Daniel Mannix, Delgany was acquired by the Dominican
Sisters for reputedly twenty thousand pounds for use as a
school for children with hearing difficulties. Over their
almost twenty year tenure, the Sisters undertook major building
programs. The 1953 wing was opened in October of that year
at a cost of seventy thousand pounds. The 1968 works were
also substantial being estimated at almost $180,000. At all
times, the Sisters advised ‘we are endeavouring to
keep to the same style of architecture’ as the original
building. By 1985, Delgany had around fifty rooms and a land
holding of 4.62 hectares. |
